Prudential Ride London
3rd and 4th August 2019
Event: Prudential Ride London
Date: 3rd and 4th August 2019
Billed as the ultimate festive of cycling, the Prudential Ride London is one of the best legacy events to come from the 2012 London Olympics. Now in its 7th year, the event is a staple on the UK’s cycling calendar and is an absolute must-do for amateurs, experienced cyclists family groups alike.
For the serious cyclists taking part in the 100-mile event, this is a fast race. Participant numbers will be capped at 25,000, a wise decision on the part of the organisers as previous years saw up to 28,000 riders take part, resulting in considerable congestion problems. Happily, these issues have now been solved, even at tricky bottleneck points like Leith Hill.
Few events can boast as iconic a route as the Prudential Ride London. The 100-mile closed road route shows London as it is rarely seen, starting off through Kensington and on to Chiswick. This section of the race is typically quite fast as riders enjoy the thrill of speeding through the classic London streetscape without the hindrance of normal traffic. The rural sections are equally spectacular as the Surrey countryside takes riders out of the city and through the rolling hills of Newlands Corner, Forrest Green and Headley Heath. Back in the city, the final push is pure magic as riders cruise alongside the Thames, past the Tower of London to the finish line on the Mall just outside Buckingham Palace. There could be no more perfect place to finish this epic event than here, surrounded by cheering crowds and with a truly iconic backdrop in one of the world’s most incredible cities.
The event has matured well and is a well-oiled machine. Plenty of thought has gone into the positioning of aid hubs and drink stations, all of which are well-laid out to ensure riders an move through quickly. London has embraced the event as only London can, the atmosphere is electric on the day and cyclists revel in the cheers from the crowd along the whole urban section of the route.
There’s no doubt about it, if you’re looking for a top-class event, the Prudential Ride London is the one to choose. And cycling aside, London is a brilliant city to spend a few days. And as always, while you’re resting the legs and soaking up the atmosphere, Bring My Bike will look after your most important piece of kit and get it home safe and sound.
