Event: Ironman 70.3 Staffordshire
Date: June 9th 2019
The IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire is one of the UK’s most popular IRONMAN events and regularly boasts the largest participation numbers in the country. First established in 2015, the event is the first race in the UK season and has played host to over 12,000 competitors in past three years. The course was changed in advance of the 2018 event in order to move the event hub from the Shugborough Estate into Stafford Town Centre. As a result, a completely new run route was introduced and several small alterations were made to the bike route while the swim route remains unchanged. The decision to move the event was made in order to improve the competitor and spectator experience and bring the event closer to the heart of Stafford Town and the changes have been met with enthusiasm from all quarters.
The 1.2-mile swim takes place in Chasewater Resevoir and consists of one anti-clockwise loop finishing at the Chasewater Sports Centre. The organisation team runs a tight ship and the marshalling at the swim start is professional and calm which is always a good sign. The transition area is a short run away from the swim exit and leads to the start of the bike course.
The 56-mile bike course takes athletes through the heart of the Staffordshire countryside on one loop through the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and then onwards towards Stafford Town Centre via Great Haywood and Tixall. The first 11 miles of the bike course has less than ideal road surfacing but once athletes manoeuvre that section the road opens up and it’s time to focus on speed and performance as the only big climb is at Cannock Chase with a few smaller rolling hills throughout the remainder of the course. The aid stations on the bike route are well-placed, evidence of the IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire organisers’ experience.
The 13.1-mile run starts at Riverway and takes athletes in and around the Stafford Town Centre before finishing in Market Square. The 3-lap run course is largely flat with one challenging hill topped with a well-placed aid stop. All in all, the IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire is a really stunning course with top-notch organisation. Perfect for newbies and IRONMAN veterans alike, the new routes bring this event to the top of the leader board as far as Bring My Bike is concerned. As always, we’ll look after your bike and keep is safe and sound while you focus on the important stuff and soak up the atmosphere in the heart of the English countryside.
