Event: KMD Ironman 70.3 Elsinore
Date: June 23rd 2019
Elsinore (also known as Helsingør) is a relatively new IRONMAN event. Perched on the very north-eastern tip of Denmark, the scenery lends a suitably dramatic setting for the KMD IRONMAN 70.3 Elsinore. Home to Shakespeare’s Hamlet, it’s easy to imagine the ill-fated Prince of Denmark observing his kingdom from the walls of Elsinore’s legendary Kronborg Castle right above the harbour.
The KMD IRONMAN 70.3 Elsinore’s swim course is a 1.9km loop inside the harbour and is well-protected from the elements. The swim includes a deep-water start and the loop itself has a simple, easy to follow layout with only one short diversion marked well-marked by buoys. The transition area is a short distance away from the swim exit and the organisers have a good system in place to enable speedy transitions.
Once the athletes are through the first transition zone they embark on the 90 kilometre Continental Tyre bike course which takes them up and around to the northwest of Elsinore itself and into North Zealand. The 2-loop bike course follows the coastline along what has been nicknamed the Danish Riviera before turning inland towards Havreholm and Bistrup. The road surface is excellent and the bike course itself is largely flat which is great for athletes looking to keep the mid- to high-range cadence going and push for a quick finish into the city centre.
The 21.1 kilometre run course starts back at the main transition area and takes its first turn out towards the coast. Circling around Kronborg Castle once again, the run route follows the perimeter of the castle grounds before turning towards the harbour and heading into the heart of the city. Following a very urban route for the remainder of the loop, the run takes in Elsinore’s most famous landmarks including the City Hall and Cathedral. Some of the run course is on cobbled streets which add another little challenge, particularly around the 8.5 kilometre mark where the road simultaneously turns to cobbles and starts to slope uphill.
Although the KMD IRONMAN 70.3 Elsinore is something of a newcomer to the IRONMAN scene, the organisation and marshalling is excellent and the atmosphere in Elsinore is great, particularly around Kronborg Castle and the final stretch leading to the bike and run finish lines. And once you’ve done all you can do and left everything out on the course, Bring My Bike will be there to look after all the logistics and get your bike safely home again.
